Rain or shine, it’s Dragon Time!
Here’s what you need to know if you’re participating.
Team size and requirements
- Maximum number of paddlers per team: 20
- Minimum number of paddlers per team: 16
- Minimum age for paddlers: 15
- No experience required, but paddlers should have a decent level of physical fitness
Fundraising expectations and conditions
- To mark the 20th anniversary of the event, teams are expected to raise a minimum of $20,000 (in other words: $1000 per person for a 20-paddler team).
- Teams who don’t get close to this fundraising objective before race day will not be given their own dragon boat. They will be combined with other teams and paddle on a combined boat.
Practice Sessions
- Practice sessions will be offered by 22Dragons, the dragon boat club that organizes and orchestrates the BDO Cedars CanSupport Dragon Boat Race.
- Practice sessions will take place on weekday evenings in August.
- The practice session schedule will be emailed to team captains in July.
- Every team is entitled to one practice. An additional practice session might be possible, but is subject to availability.
- Teams may be combined on boats for practice sessions.
Event day schedule
8:00 a.m. Paddlers arrive and check-in
9:00 a.m. Races begin*
11:45 a.m. Flower ceremony
12:00 p.m. Lunch and speeches
1:00 p.m. Races
2:00 p.m. Award ceremony
2:30 p.m. Event ends
*The official race schedule will be emailed to team captains a few days prior to the event.
What to wear on race day
- Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly. The event happens rain or shine!
- Be prepared for your shoes and clothes to get wet while racing.
- You may wish to bring a change of shoes and clothes.
- PRO TIP: wear closed-toe water shoes and use a strap for your sunglasses while racing.
- You will be given a lifejacket to wear when you race.
What to bring on race day
- A refillable water bottle (we do not sell water but have bottle-filling stations)
- Sunscreen
- A towel
Food and beverage
- Breakfast and lunch will be provided free of charge.
- Snacks will be available for purchase.
- If you have any allergies or dietary restrictions, you are encouraged to bring your own food.
Where to park and how to find us on race day
PARKING
- There is plenty of free public parking on the streets near the event site.
- We do not recommend parking in a metred spot, and we ask you to respect all parking restrictions.
- The parking lots adjacent to the event site entrance are reserved for event organizers, sponsors and vendors. Paddlers, volunteers and spectators can’t use them.
- Suggested parking areas:
- Public parking spaces all along rue William MacDonald
- 18th avenue across from Hotel de Ville public parking lot
- 34th avenue / Blvd St Joseph public parking lot
- 12th avenue / Blvd St Joseph public parking lot
- 25th Avenue Parking Lot
WHERE TO FIND US
- The event takes place on Promenade Père-Marquette in Lachine.
- The main entrance to the site is via the parking lot at the intersection of Boulevard Saint-Joseph and 21st Avenue (GPS Lachine Canoe Club).
- You can also enter the site via the footbridge located at the foot of 18th Avenue.
